In the two-part travel series Cuba after Castro, we follow Cuban-Dutch Yuri Capetillo Hardy on his emotionally charged return to his native country. When he was 19, he fled Cuba to leave the poverty, the hopelessness, and the omnipresent Fidel as far behind as he possibly could. Sixteen years later, he desperately wonders whether he made the right choice at the time. Didn't he give up on his country too easily? More and more Cubans return to their homeland to find what they left behind: not only poverty, but also human warmth and a life without a calendar. But Cuba has changed. A lot. After spending sixteen years in the Netherlands, Yuri has finally mustered up the courage to return to Cuba, wondering if he and his Dutch family could build a life for themselves over there. Despite the visible changes in Cuba, Yuri is constantly torn between hope and fear: no one goes hungry anymore and youths are outspoken these days but, isolated as Cuba still is, does the country offer any real prospects? And could he ever adjust again to the country that he has been banning to the depths of his soul for so long?
