Like all cultures, the Mayans have registered their sacred plants, whether in symbolic representations of deities, in myths, ceremonial rites, plastic manifestations, beliefs, prayers, magical practices, healing remedies, arts popular or traditions in general. All religious peoples have considered sacred plants as bearers of supernatural forces, insofar as they reveal a power or qualities proper to deities; or as prodigious beings themselves for leading to religious experiences. These are plants that are a revelation of something that transcends them, and therefore become meaningful to the community, and become symbols. They can manifest sacredness by its exceptional shape, by its size, its colors, smells, or by its beauty; for its poison, its power to alter consciousness, its healing qualities, its capacity for regeneration, or its supreme value in the plant world.
