"Published on the occasion of the exhibition, "Rosie Lee Tompkins: A Retrospective," organized and presented by the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Rosie Lee Tompkins (1936-2006) is widely considered to be among the most brilliant and inventive American quiltmakers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Indeed, her reputation has grown to the point where her work is no longer considered solely within the context of quilt-making but is celebrated as one of the great American artistic achievements of our time. And yet, Tompkins' reputation rests on no more than two or three dozen works that have been exhibited almost exclusively in the context of group exhibitions. This exhibition will include approximately 80 of her works, including quilts, pieced tops, embroideries, assemblages, and decorated objects. These works will represent a range of periods and styles in Tompkins' oeuvre, allowing audiences to appreciate not only her remarkable diversity of styles and techniques but also her themes and shifting sensibilities. The first scholarly publication on Tompkins, this fully illustrated volume includes essays by Horace D. Ballard, Andrianna Campbell, and Elaine Y. Yau that explore Tompkins's spirituality, use of abstraction, and the impact of her relationship with Eli Leon, a scholar and collector of African American quilts"--
