"The Long Nineteenth Century" is a term used by Eric Hobsbawm and others to frame an understanding of European history extending beyond the boundaries of the years 1800-99. In this collection, it is used to refer to the turbulent period of Irish history roughly from the formation of the Society of United Irishmen in 1791 to the Irish War of Independence in 1919-21. The texts in this collection, all originally published within this period, cover a wide range of topics: popular and travel literature, the Great Famine, rebellion, politics, economics, and sociology. Each text is available both for online viewing and as a downloaded, fully accessible eBook. Placenames and itineraries for many of the works are also available as KML files for viewing with Google Earth.
