Manislam boldly examines the burden of manhood within Islamic cultures and questions the role of men in contemporary Islam. In Muslim culture, there is no question that boys have more privileges than girls, as Islam has always been a patriarchy. This documentary questions if male privilege is empowering contemporary Muslim men to be happy and fulfilled. Filmmaker Nefise Ozkal Lorentzen set out on a quest to find men willing to tell their stories and discuss the complex topics of democracy, equality, violence, oppression, and male sexuality. We see a man in Kuwait creating a comic and cartoon series about superheroes. We see a man in Bangladesh travelling from one village to another, educating a community by teaching them to play a board game. We see a man in Indonesia encouraging other men to wear mini-skirts. These men, spread across different countries, are all working, in their own way, towards the common goal of reforming Islam and changing the role of masculinity in their culture. Without animosity or antagonism towards Islam or towards men, this unique documentary explores the concept of liberating men from patriarchy to lead them towards a contemporary, progressive Islam that provides freedom and happiness for both genders.
