Pendant la première guerre mondiale, l'anthropologue Polonais, Bronislaw Malinowski s'installa parmi les indigènes de l'île de Kiriwina en Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée. Le film part à la recherche des traces de ce fondateur de l'ethnologie moderne sur ces iles paradisiaques. Avec pour journal de bord le journal intime, tant décrié, de Malinowski, les auteurs rencontrent toutes sortes d'habitants de Papouasie dont l'histoire est de près ou de loin liée à celle de l'ethnologue. D'anecdotes en anecdotes, l'enquête avance de manière fragmentaire non sans beaucoup d'humour. Le film traite des légendes, celles des indigènes, celles de Malinowski, celles des missionnaires, en rapport avec ces paysages paradisiaques et mythiques des tropiques du Pacifique. Le film jette un regard ironique sur sa propre quête touristique! During the First World War, the Polish anthropologist, Bronislaw Malinowski settled among the natives of the island of Kiriwina in Papua New Guinea. The film sets out to find traces of this founder of modern ethnology on these paradisiacal islands. Using Malinowski's much-maligned diary as his diary, the authors meet all kinds of Papua residents whose history is closely or indirectly linked to that of the ethnologist. Anecdotes in anecdotes, the investigation progresses in a fragmentary way not without much humor.
