Suez Canal, Egypt: In the mid 1950's, the Suez Canal was the most strategically important water way in the world. In July 1956, after Egypt nationalized the canal led to a 250,000 strong Anglo-French-Israeli invasion. The United States appealed to the United Nations, they passed the uniting for peace resolution, which lead to cease fire and the end of hostilities in march 1957. Andrea Doria off New York, USA: In July 1956, 46 people died and 1660 crew and passengers of the Andrea Doria survived when the Italian Line's luxury ocean liner was hit in the side by the Swedish American Line's SS Stockholm during thick fog off the coast of Nantucket in the USA. Little Rock High School Arkansas, USA: On the 23rd of September 1957, nine African American students were denied access to the central high school by an angry anti-integration mob of over 1000 white students and their supporters. This led to a showdown between President Eisenhower who marshaled 1200 soldiers to escort the students and Governor Faubus who tried to prevent the students entering the school with the help of the National Guard. The school was closed for most of 1959, but reopened as an integrated school before the end of 1959.
