"Among Marco da Gagliano's fourteen published staged works, only two (La Dafne, 1608, and La Flora, 1628) survive. La Flora was presented at the Uffici Palace on the occasion of a wedding uniting the Medici and Farnese dynasties. Gagliano's setting of Salvadori's libretto, celebrating the advent of spring, clearly symbolized this marriage as well as an important change in political regime for Tuscany. La Flora remains significant today as a high quality exemplar of a mature Italian court opera produced by a celebrated composer whose oeuvre neatly spans the period from shortly after the inception of the genre in northern Italy through its transition into public opera." --Provided by publisher.
