"This book is an introduction to professional ethics in chemistry based on the view that the specific codes of conduct derive from a moral ideal. Ethical questions unique to chemistry are discussed. A large collection of specific ethical problems are included."--

This casebook offers a comprehensive overview of professional ethics in chemistry and how working chemists design solutions to real-world ethical problems. It offers a primer on ethical theory and contains a large collection of ethical problems that raise important ethical issues. The basis of the book is a series of specific cases that present various ethical problem - many that are unique to chemistry. Following these cases are commentaries that discuss the ethical issues raised, and present possible solutions in the form of morally acceptable courses of action. This second edition features new case studies and commentaries. In this updated edition of The Ethical Chemist, Jeffrey Kovac expands upon the first edition with more of an emphasis on broader social policy and science, rather than just daily ethics in the lab. Kovac focuses specifically on ethics grounded in morality, which he breaks down in three sections: the ethical practice of science, ethical relationships within the scientific community, and the relationship between science and society, particularly the applications of science. The question of why a scientist should obey the professional code is discussed. -- From back cover.
