The Scottish Health Survey has been providing data on the health of the population living in Scotland since 1995. The trend data provided are used by the Scottish government to monitor progress towards key health targets and to inform planning around health service provision. This case study will outline key stages of the research, from sampling and questionnaire development to analysis and research outputs. A number of key methodological issues and challenges are discussed, in particular, in relation to key changes to the design of the survey such as the introduction of interviewer-administered biological measurements.
