This work represents the first organic study that investigates the genesis of the ideas of Italian modernism, that is of that fruitful moment of Italian literature, in the first decades of the last century, in which there was a definitive crisis and a reversal of traditional values. Mimmo Cangiano accurately reconstructs in this essay the European and American influences of this crisis, which is not only literary but also epistemological and political, thus arriving to find the specificity and complexity of Italian literature of that period. The works of Pirandello and Papini, Soffici or Michelstaedter, in constant dialogue with the thought of Nietzsche, Mach or Croce, are also valuable to understand the historical-political events that marked Italy during the years that preceded the dictatorship.
