The volume includes annotated translations of the major essays that appeared as prefaces to one or more of Erasmus' five editions of the New Testament. It includes as well numerous other texts that were given a role to play in some of the editions, primarily letters and responses to critics, which, though ancillary to the main enterprise, shed light on Erasmus' perception of his work."--
