Beethoven himself gave the title of Pastoral to his highly-individual Sixth Symphony. Of the expressive nature of his music in general, he once remarked: "I always have a picture in my mind when I am composing, and work up to it." The picture in this case was not a painting, but a poetic image, the idea of the pastoral. Nevertheless, he did give titles also to each of the five movements: Awakening of Happy Feelings on Arriving in the Country; By the Brook; Merry Gathering of the Country Folk; Thunderstorm; and Shepherd's Song: Happy and Thankful Feelings after the Storm. The music conjures up an effective portrait of the countryside. James Naughtie introduces this performance of Beethoven's Symphony No 6 in F (Pastoral) recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, and David Attenborough talks about the enduring relationship between music and nature.
