According to Jung, a symbol like the mandala represents a creation of both the conscious and the unconscious; when such symbols are eliminated, their psychological energy disappears into the unconscious. If progress means that mythology is replaced by history, mysticism by science, and magic by technology, then modern man has lost contact with the world of symbols, with the unconscious.
