Two-stroke engines are pointed as strong contestants to four-stroke ones in terms of energy conversion efficiency. It naturally retains burned gases of previous cycles, a fact that can help to create suitable conditions for Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI). The poppet valve design seems to be the more attractive configuration for the job, because there is the possibility to actuate in the valve timing in order to make combustion more stable. This is done by controlling the amount of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), hence, the temperature and pressure in cylinder. This work presents a computational method for optimizing, in terms of fuel consumption, the proposed engine but keeping the power density of the four-stroke engines.
