Despite the success of Charlie Ahearn's seminal hip-hop film Wild Style in 1991, he created a video journal through the window of his Times Square apartment. He managed to capture Times Square in all of its pre-Giuliani glory—a period of unbridled tension when Times Square was full of low-brow adult sideshows and arcades, poverty, hookers, and yes, even high-brow theater a block away.
