Under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas--one of today's great Mahler specialists--the Verbier Festival Orchestra performs the Austrian composer's Symphony No.3. One of the longest symphonies ever written, Mahler's Third Symphony is an ode to nature: as Mahler himself put it to conductor Bruno Walter on his visit to Steinbach-am-Attersee in 1896, "There's no need to look at the landscape, all of it is in my symphony." The regional choirs Oberwalliser Vokalensemble and Haut-Valais Singing School's Chœur Cantiamo join the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the genius contralto Nathalie Stutzmann--one of the most remarkable personalities of her generation--for a performance of this hymn to life.
