Later handwritten note, partially illegible, states "[aff...] wife of [Com.] Wilkes."
"From the heirs of Prof. Renwick, donation 5 May, 1868. 404" -- handwritten on acquisition label pasted on in lower right corner.
This map was made by Jane Renwick at the age of 12. This is a typical example of a map copying exercise that was commonly part of a young woman's education in the early nineteenth century. On April 26, 1826, Jane married Charles Wilkes, who later gained fame as the commander of the United States Exploring Expedition.
