Verse in six stanzas commemorating the action of the First Regiment of Louisiana Engineers; first line: Dark as the clouds of even.
"This poem ... was widely published in handbill form and in books. ... The [Union] League issued the poem as a handbill in June 1863. Printings A-C described below were undoubtedly issued by the League although not so marked."--BAL.
BAL describes printing A as on wove paper with the caption separated from the text by a "rule, decorated with a dot at center, flanked by lozenges" and the two columns divided by a vertical rule.
Two states of printing A noted. American Antiquarian Society copy 1 printed on thick paper with the caption shifted to the left so that the vertical rule falls between the center dot and the right lozenge. American Antiquarian Society copy 2 printed on thin paper with the caption shifted to the right so that the vertical rule falls to the left of the left lozenge.
Text in two columns; printed area measures 16.9 x 10.0 cm.
