"Far from Wild? One Woman's Return to the Woods is a collection of personal essays about the author disconnecting and reconnecting with nature. The collection starts with stories from the author's childhood about her time spent in the woods with her father. But, as she grew up, she became detached from the natural world, which led to years of fearing and ignoring the outdoors. Now as a mother in her late twenties, the author reflects on this gradual disconnection with the outdoors and then makes attempts to engage more with nature so she can ensure a more positive relationship with the outdoors for her daughter. Throughout the essays, the author explores the conflicted feeling she has about nature. It's beautiful, peaceful and dangerous all at the same time. She writes about her worried thoughts about being in nature, but also examines how being female often predetermined her fears and anxieties, and looks at how women and mothers negotiate dangers when outdoors. The collection includes several vignettes about the author spending time outside with other women who have all entered into a relationship with the outdoors in different ways and choose to connect with nature for various reasons. Through writing, these outings, and the author's concurrent pregnancy, she discovers the truly indifferent nature of Nature, yet uses that discovery as a source of strength and insight." -abstract.
