Diary begins on January 1, 1853 and the family is living in Boston, Massachusetts, living near Ralph's brother Earl M. ("Mell") and his wife Lucy. Rebecca writes about the weather, her family (husband Ralph, children Georgy and Fred ["Bubby"]), attending church and lectures, doing household chores (washing, ironing, sewing, cooking, baking), going to plays and concerts, getting letters and visits from family and friends. Ralph goes on a trip to New York in mid-January and returns on February 3. Rebecca writes of attending a Quaker meeting and Sarah (her sister?) visiting the Asylum. Rebecca and her children had Scarlet fever in late April through early May. She writes about feeling lonely. Ralph's mother comes to stay with the family for awhile as she is not well. Diary ends December 31, 1853.

Diary begins on January 1, 1854 and the family is living in Boston, Massachusetts, living near Ralph's brother Earl M. ("Mell") and his wife Lucy. Rebecca writes about the weather, her family (husband Ralph, children Georgy and Fredy/Bubby), doing household chores (washing, ironing, sewing, knitting, cooking, baking), going to church and lectures, and getting letters and calls from family and friends. She goes to the city to have her "head examined and now I expect I shall know myself". Rebecca begins taking a "music session" and practices almost every day. She seems to be a bit depressed, feeling "friendless" and "gloamy". Rebecca writes about seeing an "ecleaps" on May 26 (an annular solar eclipse) and sending Georgy to school in June. The family takes a journey, stopping in Montpelier, Vermont on July 20-22 and Burlington on July 22 (they had to stay in a hotel) before reaching "Father" Cate's farm in Peru, New York; they returned home on September 1. Diary ends October 1, 1854.
