- The Jena edition of Luther's works was instigated by Johann Friedrich I, Duke of Saxony; the earliest ed. of the 8 German vols. was published between 1555 and 1558; there were numerous later editions of each vol.; the chief editor for this 5th ed. was Nicolaus von Amsdorff.
- Each vol. has a year-by-year register of all the works included within. The years in the register are in fully-rendered roman numerals (e.g. MDXVII for 1517), whereas the date ranges in the titles are shown in abbreviated forms, omitting the "MD" (so, "XVII" equals the year 1517).
- Woodcuts: on t.p. of each vol., depicting Luther and Friedrich, Duke of Saxony, kneeling before the crucified Christ; on leaf [2] of each vol. is a full page woodcut depicting the three Saxon princes and their coat of arms; initials.
