While in Moscow to represent the United States at the American National Exhibition in 1959, Vice President Richard M. Nixon famously engaged Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev in a debate over the relative merits of capitalism versus communism. The debate, which took place in a showroom of American kitchen appliances, was dubbed the "Kitchen Debate" by the American media. Khrushchev repeatedly predicted that the Soviet Union would become more influential in world politics, while Nixon argued that the superior quality of American consumer goods reflected a superior economic system.
