Craven County was one of three original counties in the colony of Carolina which included North and South Carolina and other territory. It is now extinct the original names and bondaries were discontinued in 1769. Records predating 1785 were kept at Charleston, S.C.. Over time the boundaries varied. Some of the modern counties which are in what was Craven County include Horry, Georgetown, York, Lancaster, Chester, Chesterfield, Marion, Marlboro, Dillon, Chester, Kershaw, Lee, Williamsburg, Florence, and Darlington.
The abbreviated records in this book originate from multiple counties and states (other than Craven County, South Carolina), but each relates directly in one manner or another to an early South Carolina resident or residents. Reference to source of information is at the end of each entry. Many of the sources are deed books from other colonies or states
