500    $a"As a lasting memento of the Wisconsin Centennial year, 1948, these pictures are presented in album form. The work, done by the photographic laboratory of the University of Wisconsin, includes first, pictures taken during the various portions of the day's program of May 29, 1948, the actual 100th birthday of the state; and secondly, portrayal of the Centennial Exposition at the State Fair Park. The Statehood Day program included a Citizenship program inducting several hundred new voters and awarding citizenship certificates. The parade was composed of seventy-five bands, sixty-three floats, and a very large number of marching units--all representing the entire state. The one living Civil War veteran of Wisconsin, Mr. Lansing Wilcox, age 103, of Cadott, participated in the parade and enjoyed the day greatly. The parade was the most outstanding that Wisconsin had ever experienced, being twelve miles in length and consuming over three hours to pass the reviewing stand at the head of Monona Avenue. In the afternoon, a suitable program was centered in the presentation to Governor Rennebohm, by Joseph J. Lawler, third assistant Postmaster General, of a souvenir album containing the initial printing of the Wisconsin Centennial stamp. The evening program, held at the University stadium, was presented by various nationality groups which portrayed many of the costumes and customs of old world origin. The Centennial Exposition was the outgrowth of most extensive plans made by the State Fair and assisted by subcommittees of the State Centennial Committee. That it was both meritorious and of lasting historical value was proven by the fact that almost two million people attended and unanimously expressed their wonder and satisfaction."
