The deeds were originally filed in Brown County and in Portage City when the land around Stevens Point was first part of Brown County and then part of an extended Portage County with Portage City as the county seat. When Columbia County was formed out of the southern part of Portage County, the early records remained in Portage. Some of the deeds were referred to by M.L. Rosholt in "Our County, Our Story," to describe original settlement of the area in the 1840s along the Wisconsin River.
