Travel diary of Harriet A. Merrick. "Notes taken while on a trip abroad, left Holyoke July 20th 1892." She traveled with her husband, Timothy Merrick, on the steamer Columbia (Hamburg America Line) to Europe. Included in their party are "Uncle John" "Dito" or "Dita", "the boys" (likely Charles and Ben, her husband's sons) Some of her husband's business friends see them off. The diary begins July 21 leaving Holyoke and arriving July 29 at Cuxhaven, Germany, then taking a train to Hamburg. She mentions the customs inspection not understanding their "Kodac" camera. She writes very detailed descriptions of their travels, sights, museums, etc. She writes in great detail of art works, scenery, etc. In a few places, they find a Baptist church to attend and introduce themselves. They travel through Germany, Switzerland, part of Italy and France to Paris. The diary ends abruptly in Sept. 5 at Heidelberg, with blank pages left. Entries for Paris, Sept. 11-13 are separate paper, including letterhead of the the Grand Hotel Athénée. These include a long description of a visit to a Baptist church. Her writing is educated and descriptive. This is the diary of an educated, religious, interested traveler.
