ROBERTO RISSO UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON FRENCH AND ITALIAN DEPARTMENT PhD DISSERTATION: ITALIAN LITERATURE. "Il romanzo storico intorno a Manzoni: D'Azeglio, Grossi, Guerrazzi, Tommaseo, Cantù". [Translation of the title: The historical novel around Manzoni: D'Azeglio, Grossi, Guerrazzi, Tommaseo, Cantù".] My PhD Dissertation is an original work of research, written in Italian, that deals with the Italian historical novel of the period between 1827 and 1838. To be precise, it deals with a number of less known historical novels that do have in common a political project of national pride awakening and an aim to teach as much as possible as Italian history to the reader. The reason for such a choice is clear: in the scientific bibliography about Italian historical novel a study on this group of authors and their major works still does not exist: so my study, consistent and well documented, fills a gap in the criticism on Italian literature of that time. The choice of the authors and works strictly depends on the time frame and the ideological, functional and goal of their works: between the two major author of the time and of the genre (Alessandro Manzoni and Ippolito Nievo) the five authors that appear in the title of my work represent a great example of literary creation and political discourse on the Nation formation and on the consequent national identity struggle all within the limits of the adventure novel. Plus the Unification time, the so called Italian "Risorgimento", is depicted through the description of fights and struggles of the past, both Middle Age past and Renaissance. My method is strictly philological, with a constant attention to the test and its web of cultural, literary and structural connection with other works of the past and present. The Structuralist method is also a way of conducting research within the texts that I used a lot. In conclusion I can say that my PhD Dissertation on the Italian historical novel is a very accurate study on the matter, with special attention to the Italian politics and its contemporary European more general context, a study that took four years of my intellectual life and that is nothing less a beginning of a wider and deeper study on the Italian novel of the XIX Century.
