Profiled are Guatemalan Rodi Alvarado, who fled to the US after a decade of beatings by her husband, and whose petition for political asylum became a landmark case; Rosa Cavalleri, brutalized by her husband until she fled Italy in 1887, now celebrated in her hometown as a woman who challenged tradition; and Ferdows Naficy and her two daughters, whose story of how they fled Iran is a chilling tale of courage.
