A temperature-sensing device suitable for chronic implantation in 3- to 8-kg animals was designed to be recoverable. The implant case and screw-on cap were machined from Teflon stock, which provides a moisture-impervious seal between case and cap. The configuration of the finished assembly permits the sensor circuitry and battery to slide readily into the case. The screw-on cap permits battery replacement without damaging the case-to-cap seal. The sensor was calibrated over a temperature range of 34 degrees to 42 degrees C. The physical size of implant is contingent on battery size. The devices transmitted primate core temperatures within plus or minus 0.1 degrees C. for periods of from 173 to 204 days.
