World War II letters written by Arild E. Nielsen (born in November 1919 in Nebraska) to his parents in Centuria (Wis.) while serving with Company D, 738th Military Police Battalion. Nielsen left Milwaukee (Wis.) June 12th, 1942 for Fort Sheridan (Ill.) and by August 1942 was stationed in Australia where he spent the next year. Later he was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea, and Okinawa. In his letters, Nielsen comments on the economics, politics, and flora and fauna of the Pacific Islands as well as describing daily activities and duties, entertainment, articles and books he is reading, and food. After censorship is lifted in September of 1945 Nielsen's letters become more detailed and he describes more fully the specific locales in which he served and conditions and situations encountered by his battalion.
