Cartoons, 1929-1940s consisting of pen and ink drawings made by Sid Stone. A substantial portion are drawings for the "Chester the Pup" comic strip that appeared in the Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Journal. Chester began appearing in 1939. Stone took over illustration duties in 1942, accompanying story lines written by George O'Halloran. The strip ended its run in 1947. Other drawings include multi-panel strips featuring "Artie Choakes" and "Private Jones" characters; advertising for Brillo, Gargoyle coffee, Friedman's men's store, and other products; editorial cartoons and single-panel cartoons. A few comics feature German dialogue; some cartoons and the Brillo drawings are signed Sig Klipstein. Stone, born in Siegbert Klipstein in Berlin, Germany, immigrated to the United States at 17. He married Shanah Levant in Milwaukee in 1936, and he and his wife established Stone Advertising, followed by Stonecroft.
