Murphy served as an attorney in the firm of Murphy & Desmond, as president of the Wisconsin Historical Society, and as chair of the Board of Bar Examiners of the State Supreme Court. The documents consist of diplomas, awards and citations, and news clippings concerning his role in the Wisconsin Historical Society and his audience with Pope Pius XII in 1950. The photographs consist of portraits of Murphy, Murphy in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and in Rome immediately following his audience with the Pope.
