Between June 1980 and August 1981, Lewis Koch, David Mandel, and Michael Simon photographed commonplace structures and the built environment in southern Wisconsin sponsored with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission. This survey represents the approach of a single subject from three different points of view. Its goals were to depict the interplay between structures, manipulated landscapes, and the natural environment; to delineate the role played by vernacular architecture in the expression of community, corporate, and personal identities; to describe stylistic changes in regional architecture; to indicate the sequential adaptation and utilization of commonplace structures; and to demonstrate shifts in public attitudes toward the built environment.
