Correspondence of Joel Whitcomb and his family, the bulk of which consists of the Civil War letters of Whitcomb to his wife Miriam and his parents in 1864-1865. Whitcomb enlisted with the 14th Wisconsin Infantry, Company E in 1861 and served in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina before being discharged in October 1865. Though the content of these letters are largely of a personal nature, he does describe his company's frequent movements and his thoughts about the war in general. Also included is a service record for Joel Whitcomb indicating his dates of service and his company's engagements during the war. Some letters from the early 1880s between Elisa Whitcomb and her mother describe the daily activities of Elisa; and a few letters from 1904, written by Stella Sawyer from Ashville, Oregon to her family in Oneida County describe the death of her father, Joel Whitcomb, and other family matters.
