Papers of Robert Froehlke, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin law school and executive for Sentry Insurance Company who served as assistant Secretary of Defense (1969-1971) and Secretary of the Army (1971-1973). The papers document his time in Washington, D.C. from 1969 through 1973 and include official and personal correspondence, speeches, travel itineraries and records, and personal records, plus a few items about Sentry Insurance. Correspondence details administrative tasks, but also includes numerous reflections on contemporary issues including the youth movement, the Vietnam War, and the Nixon administration. Records also include correspondence concerning Froehlke's decision in 1974 to speak out in favor of amnesty for draft evaders and his testimony before Congress. These files consist of incoming opinion letters both for and against Froehlke's position, occasionally with copies of his response letters attached.
