A typewritten biographical sketch by Hougen of Magnus Swenson (1854-1936), a Norwegian-born chemical engineer and public figure who developed several major advances in the sugar refining, mining, and cotton industries.

Swenson served in numerous public and private posts, including head of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, president of the Norwegian-American Steamship Line and the Norwegian Historical Society, Federal Food Administration for Wisconsin and chairman of the Wisconsin Council of Defense during World War I, and an assistant to Herbert Hoover in providing civilian relief to Northern Europe after the war.
