Two commissions, both dated August 17, 1778, issued and signed by Haldimand in his capacity as British governor of Canada, and written in English and French. Each commission confirms a Menominee Indian, the first Chawanon and the second Chigadheaugimas, in his rank as 'Grand Chief', and orders all Indians and British alike to treat him as such. Chawanon resided on the west side of the Fox River, near the site of what would later become Fort Howard, and he was the grandfather of Chief Oshkosh.
