Six letters written by James Bennett of Madison, Wis., while serving as a private in Company A of the 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (the "Madison Zouaves"). The letters are addressed to his wife and daughter and cover the period Sept. 17, 1862 through Feb. 1, 1863. Bennett expresses his love and concern for his wife and daughter, writes about his health, and describes his unit's movements. Also included is a letter from a relative to Mrs. Bennett expressing concern for James' wounds received on an expedition up the Arkansas River, for which he was discharged from military duty.
