Minutes, correspondence, clippings, and planning materials concerning Wisconsin's participation in the Mississippi River Parkway Commission, an international organization established in 1939 to construct and beautify the scenic Great River Road from Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Gulf of Mexico. M. W. Torkelson, director of regional planning for the Wisconsin State Planning Board, was the first Wisconsin representative to the international committee. Responsibility shifted to the Highway Commission in the 1960s. Membership on the Wisconsin Commission now includes representatives appointed by the county boards of Wisconsin counties bordering the Mississippi River.
