A typewritten autobiography and two brief historical essays by educator Josiah Pickard. The autobiography concerns his youthful education in Massachusetts and Maine, graduation from Bowdoin College, teaching at the Platteville Academy in Wisconsin (1846-1859), membership in the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, service as Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction (1860-1864), and experiences as the Chicago Superintendent of Schools (1864-1878) and as president of the State University of Iowa. Included are numerous anecdotes conveying his opinions on effective educational methods.

One essay concerns individuals significant in the early history of the National Education Association including Daniel B. Hagar, T. W. Bicknell, N. A. Calkins, Zalman Richards, W. T. Harris, and others. The other essay is titled "Early Educational Movements in Wisconsin.
