Photocopies of original letters and their typed transcriptions/translations written by brothers Peter, John, and George Yantz to their parents and to their sister, Christine Shaller, in Thompsonville, Racine County, Wisconsin, during their Civil War service with the Wisconsin 2nd and 4th Cavalries, and the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry. Letters describe conditions, troop movements, and family concerns, and one letter from Peter vividly describes the aftermath of the battle at Ft. Donelson on the Cumberland River on Feb. 3, 1863. There are also a few letters to Christine from her husband Frederick and a few miscellaneous family letters from this time period. Some of the letters are written in German, but all the transcriptions are in English and were prepared by Robert J. Peterson.
