The Transportation Commission (WIHV85-A214) became the Office of the Commissioner of Transportation on July 1, 1983, as provided by Chapter 347, Laws of 1981. The Office was attached to the Dept. of Transportation (WIHV85-A1884) for administrative purposes. The Office was eliminated by 1993 Wisconsin Act 16 which dispersed its duties to other agencies. In Wisconsin State Archives' database entries, the above form of name is used for all appropriate records dating 1983-1993.
The Office had quasi-judicial responsibility for transportation regulation. It conducted hearings relating to driver licensing, vehicle titles, regulation of airports, aircraft, aircraft dealers, railroads and motor carriers, and state transportation plans, policies, goals, priorities and programs.
