Papers of Charles A. Smith, historian and secretary of the faculty of the University of Wisconsin (1921-1943). The papers consist almost entirely of chronologically arranged correspondence (Box 1: 1903-1933; Box 2: 1934-1944) from friends and family. The majority of the letters were received from three brothers: Chauncey I. Smith, a Kansas farmer; O. L. Smith, a minister in Missouri; and D. O. Smith, a physician in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their letters provide a vivid discussion of their experiences during World War I, the flu epidemic of 1919, and the Great Depression and their views on national politics during the 1930s and 1940s. Also included is brief biographical information, notes, and some writings.
