The Wisconsin State Legislature created the Department of Engineering in 1915 (Chapter 500, Laws, 1915). The department was abolished in 1929 when its functions were assumed by the Bureau of Engineering (WIHV89-A419) (Chapter 468, Laws, 1929).
The department was created to consolidate all state engineering and architectural services including supervising state engineering, architectural, and construction work; assisting and advising state agencies; and inspecting state power, pumping, and heating plants. The department was organized into several divisions: architectural, drainage, highway, industrial, military architecture and engineering, railroad and utilities, sanitary engineering, portage levees, and power plants.
