Papers, audio, and film from the life of John K.M. McCaffery, a radio and tv newscaster in the mid-20th century. Correspondence dating between 1947 and 1968 that relates to both McCaffery's personal and professional life is in the collection. Audio tapes of Books and Voices, a radio series moderated by Westinghouse Broadcasting Co., 1956-1957, and Progress, a series of public service interviews prepared for General Electric, 1961-1962 are included. Prominent interviewees include William Benton, Bruce Catton, Bennett Cerf, Leo Cherne, Raymond Firestone, Sol Hurok, Lester Markel, Grace Metalious, James Michener, Jawaharlal Nehru, J.C. Penney, Basil Rathbone, Ronald Reagan, John F. Royal, Richard S. Salant, Mrs. Lewis Sinclair, and William H. Whyte Jr. Miscellaneous discs include conversations with William Bendix, Irene Dune, Arlene Francis, Boris Karloff, and Betsy Palmer. Some of the interviews concern or include Fred Allen, George Bernard Shaw, and Dylan Thomas. Additionally, there are audio tapes of interviews, transcripts of interviews, book summaries, and marketing materials for The Living Author program that McCaffery hosted in the mid-1960s. Drafts of McCaffery's writings including essays, speeches and a manuscript titled "The Woman and the Spy," are included.
