- Hiram P. Graham was born in Windham, N.Y. on March 29, 1820. He came to Eau Claire as an employee of the Eau Claire Lumber Company in 1856, and his family joined him shortly thereafter. After four years with the Eau Claire Lumber Company, he bought a planing mill (Graham, White & Company), which eventually evolved into the Phoenix Manufacturing Company. Graham served as president of both the Phoenix Manufacturing Company and the Dells Lumber Company. Graham also held a number of positions in public service. He was appointed county sheriff in 1862, and he served as postmaster general under President Cleveland from 1888-1889. He was also a trustee of the village of Eau Claire and was later elected first mayor of Eau Claire. He died on January 24, 1902.
