At the famous Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, researchers Per Sodersten and Cecilia Bergh have developed a new treatment for eating disorders that is in direct opposition to the current therapies. This is because instead of understanding eating disorders as caused by psychiatric illness, they see the psychological problems associated with eating disorders as a result of the starvation of the eating disorder. The eating disorder, the risk factors which are too little food and too much exercise, then may lead to starvation, which then result in the psychological symptoms associated with eating disorders. At their clinic, they teach patients how to eat properly again, and they see the psychological problems begin to disappear. They report stunning results. Seventy-five percent of their patients are in remission after one year, and of these patients, ninety percent are still in remission after five years. Since they are challenging the conventional beliefs about the etiology of eating disorders, Sodersten and Bergh are having trouble getting their research taken seriously in the scientific community.
