Okah Tubbee (b. 1810 or 11), whose name means Big Chief, was kidnapped in infancy and brought up as a negro slave in Natchez, Mississippi. A brief description of the Choctaw nation and its history introduces the narrative. Tubbee's childhood is then discussed, with a particular focus on how he was treated by the slave woman who raised him, as well as his constant confusion regarding his origins. Tubbee's desire to learn the facts of how he came to be enslaved drives much of the narrative, as do his travels around the Deep South and his various professions, particularly performing and teaching music.
