The society was originally organized in 1853 as Wisconsin Fruit Growers Association; notices and reports were published in Transactions of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society, v. 4-6, 1854/57-1860; there are also separate reports of the society for 1854, 1855, 1859 and 1860. The meeting of 1860 appears to have been the last one held by the earlier society and, shortly after, it was disbanded. In 1865 it was reorganized as Wisconsin State Horticultural Society; its first proceedings, 1864/68, 1869, were published in Transactions of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society, v. 7-8, 1861/68, 1869, and were also separately issued; in 1871 the horticultural society was incorporated, with provision in its charter for the separate publication of its Transactions; the volume for 1870/71 was the first one issued under this provision.
Continued in Wisconsin horticulture; official organ of the Wisconsin State Horticultural Society.
